Xiaomi / Mi Home

Xiaomi's ecosystem covers an extraordinary range of devices at low prices, much of it re-badged from partner manufacturers. Integration quality depends on which sub-brand, which region and which generation you happen to have.

Why we use Xiaomi / Mi Home

  • The catalogue includes devices that simply have no equivalent elsewhere.
  • Zigbee devices sold under the Xiaomi and Aqara umbrella pair with a local coordinator and work well.
  • Prices are low enough to make experimenting cheap.

Where we do not, and why

  • Wi-Fi devices depend on regional Mi Cloud servers, and choosing the wrong region at setup can make integration impossible without a factory reset.
  • Cloud tokens for integration can expire or be invalidated, breaking the connection without warning.
  • The same product name can cover several generations that behave differently.
  • Support is effectively non-existent once a device is out of the box.

Where it fits in a CtrlSpace build

We use the Zigbee half without reservation - much of it is Aqara anyway. For Wi-Fi devices we integrate what a client owns and avoid specifying more, because the regional cloud dependency is a fragility we would rather not design in.

Why does the Xiaomi region matter?

Wi-Fi devices bind to a regional cloud server at setup, and integration depends on matching it. Picking the wrong one often means a factory reset and starting again, so it is worth getting right the first time.

Are Aqara and Xiaomi the same company?

Aqara is made by Lumi United, a Xiaomi ecosystem partner. The products overlap and some devices are sold under both names, which is part of why the naming is confusing.
