Tuya / Smart Life

Tuya is not really a brand - it is a platform that hundreds of manufacturers white-label. If you have bought an unbranded smart device online, it is probably Tuya inside. Whether that is fine or a problem depends entirely on whether it is Zigbee or Wi-Fi.

Why we use Tuya / Smart Life

  • Tuya Zigbee devices pair with our own coordinator and run entirely locally, with no Tuya account involved. This half of the range is genuinely useful.
  • The catalogue is enormous and the prices are low, which makes unusual devices - specific curtain motors, odd sensor formats - findable.
  • Local availability in Singapore is excellent.

Where we do not, and why

  • Tuya Wi-Fi devices talk to Tuya's cloud by design. Local control requires extracting device keys, and those break on firmware updates - it is not a foundation for a household system.
  • Firmware varies between manufacturers using the same platform, so two identical-looking devices can behave differently.
  • Some Zigbee devices use non-standard clusters and need per-model handling before they behave properly.
  • Support is with whichever brand put its name on the box, which is often nobody.

Where it fits in a CtrlSpace build

We specify Tuya Zigbee devices without hesitation when they are the right shape for the job, particularly curtain motors and unusual sensors. We avoid Tuya Wi-Fi devices in new designs, and where a client already owns them we usually plan to replace them over time.

Are Tuya devices safe to use with Home Assistant?

The Zigbee ones are - they pair with your own coordinator and never touch Tuya's servers. The Wi-Fi ones are cloud-dependent, and making them local requires extracting keys that break on firmware updates.

How do I tell whether a Tuya device is Zigbee or Wi-Fi?

Zigbee devices need a hub or coordinator to pair with and usually say Zigbee on the box. Wi-Fi devices join your network directly during setup. If you are choosing before buying, ask us - the answer changes whether we would specify it.
