TP-Link Tapo & Kasa

TP-Link's consumer smart range covers cameras, plugs and bulbs at supermarket prices. It works well enough out of the box, and the direction of travel on local control has been the wrong way.

Why we use TP-Link Tapo & Kasa

  • Very cheap and available everywhere in Singapore.
  • Some Tapo cameras expose an RTSP stream, which makes local recording possible.
  • The Kasa plugs had a good local API and integrate well where that firmware remains.
  • Setup is genuinely easy for a household to do themselves.

Where we do not, and why

  • TP-Link has restricted local API access on parts of the range through firmware updates, breaking working integrations.
  • RTSP support on cameras is inconsistent and account-gated on some models.
  • Cloud dependency for most functions, and a mandatory account.
  • Firmware updates have changed behaviour without notice more than once.

Where it fits in a CtrlSpace build

Integrated where a client already owns it, with the caveat that a firmware update may change what is possible. Not specified for new work - for a camera we would pick Reolink, and for a plug something with a documented local API.

Can Tapo cameras record locally?

Some models expose RTSP and can, though support is inconsistent and has been account-gated on certain firmware. If local recording matters, confirm RTSP on the specific model before buying.

Why not recommend TP-Link when it is so cheap?

Because the local access we would depend on has been narrowed by firmware updates more than once. A device whose capabilities can shrink after installation is a poor basis for something you rely on.
