Tesla

Tesla vehicles and Powerwall integrate genuinely well - charge state, climate preconditioning, home energy flow. The complication is that Tesla has repeatedly changed its API terms, including introducing charges for access.

Why we use Tesla

  • Charging can follow reality: start when the rate is lowest, stop when the house needs the capacity, precondition the cabin before you leave.
  • Powerwall and solar data integrate cleanly into home energy dashboards.
  • Arrival and departure become useful triggers for the rest of the house.

Where we do not, and why

  • The Fleet API replaced the older interface and introduced access charges, which broke existing integrations.
  • Cloud-dependent for vehicle commands, with rate limits that constrain how often you can poll.
  • Frequent polling affects vehicle standby battery drain, so it has to be configured with care.

Does polling the car drain the battery?

It can, if it is done too often, because frequent requests keep the vehicle awake. We configure conservative polling and use arrival events rather than constant checking.
