Samsung SmartThings

Real Zigbee, Z-Wave, Thread and Matter radios in the hardware, and the most capable of the mainstream platforms. The caution is that Samsung has rearchitected it more than once and taken working setups with it.

Why we use Samsung SmartThings

  • Genuine multi-protocol radios, so it is not just a Wi-Fi bridge.
  • Matter and Thread support is solid.
  • Reasonable automation capability by closed-platform standards.

Where we do not, and why

  • Two significant platform migrations have broken existing installations, including the retirement of the Groovy engine.
  • Local execution is partial rather than complete, so cloud outages still bite.
  • Ties you to Samsung's roadmap for something built into your walls.

Where it fits in a CtrlSpace build

If a client already runs SmartThings, we usually migrate the Zigbee and Z-Wave devices directly onto Home Assistant rather than bridging - the devices are standard and they join a local coordinator without complaint.

Can I move my SmartThings devices to Home Assistant?

Most of them, yes. Zigbee and Z-Wave devices are standard and can be re-paired to a local coordinator. Samsung appliances stay on their own cloud integration.

Is SmartThings good enough on its own?

It is the strongest of the closed hubs. The reservation is history: two platform rewrites have broken working installations, which is a real risk for something wired into a house.
