Ring

Slick hardware, an excellent app and the best-known doorbell in the world. It is also a closed cloud system where recording requires a subscription, there is no local video path, and Amazon owns the footage pipeline.

Why we use Ring

  • The hardware and app experience are genuinely good, and the doorbell works reliably.
  • Very easy to install, including battery models that need no wiring.
  • Motion detection and notifications are well tuned.

Where we do not, and why

  • No local recording. No RTSP. If the subscription lapses, you have a live view and nothing else.
  • Every frame goes through Amazon's infrastructure, and the company's history of law-enforcement footage sharing is a matter of record.
  • Home Assistant integration is cloud-based and has broken repeatedly on vendor-side changes.
  • You cannot build automations around it with any confidence, because the API is not yours.

Where it fits in a CtrlSpace build

We do not specify it. Where a client already has one we will integrate what the cloud API allows, and we will be honest that the integration may break when Amazon changes something. For a doorbell we would fit a Reolink or a UniFi unit recording locally.

Why do you not recommend Ring?

Because there is no local recording path. Your footage exists only on Amazon's servers, only while you keep paying, and the integration depends on an API you have no claim on. For a camera watching your front door, that is the wrong set of trade-offs.

What should I use for a video doorbell instead?

A Reolink or UniFi doorbell recording to storage in your home. No subscription, footage that stays on the property, and an integration that will not break when a vendor changes its API.
