Why we use Reolink

  • RTSP and ONVIF on most models, so footage records to your own NVR or machine and the vendor is not in the path.
  • No subscription for local recording, and the cameras keep working if the internet drops.
  • PoE models need one cable for power and data, which is the right way to install a fixed camera.
  • Good value - image quality per dollar is well ahead of the subscription brands.
  • Solid Home Assistant integration with motion and object detection events.

Where we do not, and why

  • A few models restrict or omit RTSP, and buying one of those undermines the whole point. The model has to be checked before purchase.
  • The vendor app pushes cloud features that are unnecessary once local recording is set up.
  • Onboard AI detection is decent rather than excellent, and it varies by model.
  • Battery models are convenient and always a compromise on responsiveness.

Where it fits in a CtrlSpace build

Our default for home CCTV. PoE cameras, cabled where possible, recording to a local NVR or a Frigate instance on the Home Assistant machine, with detection events driving notifications. No subscription and no footage of your family on somebody else's servers.

Reolink, answered plainly

Do Reolink cameras need a subscription?

Not for local recording. Footage goes to your own NVR or machine and stays there. The subscription only applies to Reolink's optional cloud storage, which we do not use.

Which Reolink model should I buy?

A PoE model with confirmed RTSP support. A few models in the range restrict it, and that is the one specification that actually matters - without RTSP the camera cannot record locally.
