Philips Hue

The reference standard for smart bulbs and light strips. Colour accuracy, dimming smoothness and reliability are all better than the alternatives, and the Hue Bridge exposes a local API that Home Assistant uses directly.

Why we use Philips Hue

  • Dimming quality is the best in the category. It goes properly low without flicker, and it dims warm the way a filament does.
  • The Hue Bridge has a documented local API, so control is instant and does not touch Philips servers.
  • It is genuinely reliable. Hue bulbs installed years ago are still working and still receiving updates.
  • The catalogue covers bulbs, strips, outdoor fittings and lamps, so a whole scheme can be consistent.

Where we do not, and why

  • It is the most expensive option by a wide margin, and the cost multiplies across a house.
  • It is bulbs rather than switches, so it hits the problem where somebody turns the wall switch off and everything disappears.
  • Some newer features have moved behind a Hue account or subscription, which is a direction worth watching.
  • Without the Bridge, some capability is lost - and pairing Hue bulbs directly to a generic Zigbee coordinator is possible but not always the better outcome.

Where it fits in a CtrlSpace build

We specify Hue where light quality is the point: a media room, a feature wall, a lamp that sets the mood, outdoor and garden lighting. General room lighting is usually smart switches instead, because the economics and the wall-switch rule both point that way.

Do I need the Hue Bridge?

For the best experience, yes. The Bridge gives a fast local API, proper group behaviour and reliable updates. Hue bulbs can be paired directly to a generic Zigbee coordinator, but you lose some of that polish.

Is Hue worth it compared with cheaper bulbs?

For the two or three places where light quality actually matters, yes - the dimming and colour are visibly better. For lighting a whole flat, smart switches cost less and solve the wall-switch problem at the same time.
