LIFX

Bright, vivid Wi-Fi bulbs with no bridge required and, unusually for a Wi-Fi product, a genuinely good local LAN protocol. Colour output is arguably better than Hue. The complications are price, network load and corporate turbulence.

Why we use LIFX

  • A real local LAN API, so control is instant and the cloud is not involved.
  • No bridge to buy, which simplifies a small installation.
  • Colour saturation and brightness are excellent, better than Hue on some measures.

Where we do not, and why

  • Wi-Fi, so twenty bulbs means twenty Wi-Fi clients. That is a genuine problem at whole-home scale.
  • Expensive, in the same bracket as Hue without the ecosystem breadth.
  • The company has changed hands and gone through restructuring, which makes long-term support harder to predict.

Where it fits in a CtrlSpace build

A reasonable choice for a handful of bulbs where colour matters and adding a Zigbee hub is not wanted. Not for a whole house, because the Wi-Fi arithmetic does not work.

Is LIFX better than Hue?

On raw colour and brightness, arguably yes, and it needs no bridge. On ecosystem breadth, dimming refinement and long-term support confidence, Hue is ahead. At whole-home scale the Wi-Fi device count settles it in Hue's favour.

Do LIFX bulbs work without internet?

Yes. They speak a local LAN protocol, so Home Assistant controls them directly on your network with no cloud involved.
