IKEA

IKEA's smart range - bulbs, buttons, blinds, plugs and sensors - is cheap, standards-compliant Zigbee that works fine on a local coordinator. It does the basics well and does not pretend to do more.

Why we use IKEA

  • Standard Zigbee, so devices pair directly with our coordinator without a Dirigera or Tradfri gateway.
  • The price is genuinely low, particularly for bulbs and buttons.
  • The roller blinds are one of the cheapest routes to motorised window covering.
  • Physically available in Singapore, which import-only brands are not.

Where we do not, and why

  • Colour quality and dimming are noticeably behind Hue, especially at the low end.
  • The catalogue is narrow and changes without much notice.
  • The Dirigera hub had a rough launch and offers little that a local coordinator does not.
  • Some older Tradfri devices are slow to respond and act as poor mesh routers.

Do IKEA smart bulbs need the IKEA hub?

No. They are standard Zigbee and pair with the coordinator on your Home Assistant machine. The Dirigera gateway adds little for our purposes.

Are IKEA blinds good enough?

For a bedroom or a study, yes, and they are the cheapest way to try motorised window covering. For a large living room window or anything on a track, a proper curtain motor is the better answer.
