Google Nest

Nest cameras and doorbells are well made and the detection is genuinely good. The platform history is the problem: the developer API was shut down and replaced, features have moved behind subscriptions, and there is no local video path.

Why we use Google Nest

  • Detection quality - distinguishing people, packages and vehicles - is among the best available.
  • The hardware is well built and the app is clear.
  • Integrates with Google Home for households already invested there.

Where we do not, and why

  • Google shut down the Works with Nest API, breaking every existing integration overnight. The replacement requires a paid developer registration.
  • No local recording and no RTSP. Video history requires a Nest Aware subscription.
  • Google has discontinued Nest hardware lines before, and support ends when they decide.
  • The current integration path is cloud-only and rate-limited.

Google Nest, answered plainly

Can Nest cameras record locally?

No. There is no local recording and no RTSP stream. Video history requires a Nest Aware subscription and lives on Google's servers.

Why does the Nest integration need a paid developer account?

Because Google retired the original API and replaced it with one that requires registration in its device access programme, which carries a one-time fee. That change broke every existing integration when it happened.
