Google Home

The most forgiving setup and the best voice recognition of the three assistants. The structural problem is that the automation logic lives in a data centre, and Google has retired products on its own schedule more than once.

Why we use Google Home

  • Voice recognition and natural language handling are still the best of the three.
  • As a voice layer over Home Assistant it is excellent, and most households already own a speaker.
  • Device onboarding is genuinely easy, which matters for the non-technical members of a household.

Where we do not, and why

  • Automations are cloud-executed. Your lights depend on a data centre being reachable, and on a home network in Singapore that is a real failure mode.
  • Google has discontinued hardware and removed features from working products, which is a poor basis for infrastructure in your walls.
  • Very limited conditional logic, and no useful history.

Can I keep my Google speakers if I move to Home Assistant?

Yes. Home Assistant exposes your devices to Google Home, so the speakers keep working exactly as before while the automations move onto the hub in your house.

Why not just use Google Home for everything?

Because the logic runs in a data centre. An internet outage or a Google service problem takes your automations with it, and the automation capability is limited to simple triggers.
